Happenings.

Soccer tournament
My friend's church organised a 7aside 3/4 field football tournament on Sunday, and it was a sucker. Firstly because I was made to play as a defender since nobody wanted to. We started the first game apprehensively and it was pretty boring and at half time I asked the friend to put me up in attack but he chose to stick to the same plan. During a corner I just ran up when I wasn't supposed to and scored a header, and we won that game 1-0. Same thing next match, and I went forward more, asking someone to track back in my absence. And I actually missed 2 glorious opportunies, volleying over and hitting the bar in identical close range positions. We won 4-0, but everyone laughed at me for being so 'charitable'. Hahaha. Third game we won 3-1, but the goals came after I shot straight at the goalkeeper from near. The game stopped for a few minutes because his stomach hurt from the impact of the ball. And everyone laughed at me again. Oh man that really sucks. Missing three easy chances. Totally unlike me, but glad it didn't prove costly. And so we qualified for the quarter-finals, against a much stronger opponent, so I was told (which I agreed) to stay back in defence. Unfortunately we went behind to a freak goal of the weirdest kind. A simple back pass to the goalkeeper saw him miskick and slice the ball by the thinnest margins and the ball rolled into the net. An own goal. And as we searched for the equaliser I was so desperate to go up but was told not to. And we had a lot of chances, while they did not even have a shot. That was our mystery of the day. How can a team beat us when they did not have a single chance. Heh. We then jokingly blamed the goalkeeper for such carelessness but it was all in good fun, and we really had a nice time there, despite the horrible pitch conditions, with random watery and rocky patches all around.

Euro2004 final
Watched the match with the neighbours (the same guys whom I played soccer earlier). It was such a boring game. Nothing new, because Greece was in it. And they won it, their 3rd straight 1-0 victory, all from headers. Not gonna say whether they deserve it or not, but it was really an anti-climax. All the pyrotechnics set up and fired off at the end, which I'm sure the organisors had hoped it was for their own team, were for the greeks, made up of mostly bench warmers in their respective clubs.

No controversy, no action, not much to talk about. And I find it really amusing that girls are making statements over this match. As I type I have two nicknames on my msn (of girls) depicting words like 'yay Greece won!', and in other sites I've visited, the first sentence the girls sprout are sentences of the same nature.

As a pending arts graduate, and a very very bored-outta-his-brains person, I shall hereby come up with reasons why this is so.

1) The girls are trying to fit in to the male society by being interested in the male dominant sport.
2) They are just trying to attract attention, thinking that with a football themed nickname they will be noticed.
3) They betted on Greece and won some money.
4) Their friends betted on Portugal and they are laughing in their faces.
5) They are telling everyone that "I told you so! I knew Greece would win!" even though the only thing they know about this football tournament prior to the final is Greece beat Portugal earlier and that Beckham missed a penalty.
6) They are faking cool. Because football is cool !! Yo yo wassup yo.
7) They are telling everyone they actually follow the news. And this is an easier topic than say "Did you see how skinny Saddam is now?", because the conversation topic will be simpler had someone initiated it.
8) They have become affectionate with the word "Greece" because that's the word they see all day, everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

Downtown adventure
Couldn't sleep till noon today because I had to go to suntec to buy spiderman2 tickets, which my friend said are buy1get1 free at suntec for debit card holders. I reached there around 1pm and the tickets were fully redeemed. I smsed my friend asking if he still wants to watch it and he said how about next monday instead.

That's like, shit you man, you want me to wake up early and go all the way to suntec again to try my luck? But I replied anything let's ask the rest of them. We then decided on the 9pm show but seats were only for the 2nd front and worse. And the later show was a little too late, so we thought let's watch another day.

I felt real stupid having to wake up and travel all the way there in vain, especially when I was so tired, but in the end it was ALL GOOD because I could go home earlier. I'm sure I'd be sleeping in the cinema now had we agreed to watch the show. I also took my first trip to the library at the Esplanade, and it was wonderful. They even had a piano room for people to practise, and the lounge and cafe seemed extremely cozy as well. But the air con was a tad too cold and I fell asleep reading my book, and that was when I went home.

Aftermath: The debit card promotion wasn't valid for my case, I think. In any case I don't intend to watch spiderman2 because I haven't watched spiderman1, and I'm not really interested in comic based movies. And now I get to watch FRIENDS at 10pm later. So I'm cool.
